A Big Day In Australian Sport

Today has been one of the biggest days of Australian sport for quite a while, at least this year. The Wallabies began their international season with a huge win over The Barbarians. The mashed together squad of The Barbarians was no match for the crisp passing and team work of a new looking Wallabies squad.
Australia started off a little slow but then began to play some awesome rugby finally running out winners 55 to 7 at the Sydney Football Stadium. Former Rugby League star and sometimes boxer, Sonny Bill Williams was playing his first international rugby game for the Barbarians. He was greeted by a massive hit from Wallabies captain Stirling Mortlock but knowing how big and dumb he is Sonny probably didn’t feel it.
On the Wallabies young future superstar James O’Connor got himself a try near the end of the match. All in all a great opening effort to the campaign.
After probably the funniest and greatest sports result this year, England losing to The Netherlands in the Twenty/20 World cricket tournament, Australia began their tilt at the title against the West Indies. But it was not to be a good outing.
Our top order except for young David Warner all fell in a heap and it was left to the lower order to get us to 7/169. But worse was to come with Windies captain Chris Gayle smashing the Aussie attack to all parts of the ground on his way to a quickfire 88 and his team made the total in the 16th over. Hopefully Ricky and the boys can turn it around.
But the biggest match of the day was being held in Doha, Qatar. The Socceroos needed just a draw to qualify for next years football World Cup and after a tight but entertaining game it ended 0-0 and we got the point we needed. The Qataris tried all sorts of ways to curtail the Aussie attack, at one point striker Josh Kennedy was almost wearing their number 13 as a jacket.
But for all the media people who have complained how the Socceroos have played to get here, can you please just shut up. We failed time and time again to make the World Cup. Then we finally make it and everyone goes crazy. We then shift to a completely different confederation and play against teams we’ve barely heard of and everyone expects us to play like Brazil and win 20-0.
It’s never going to happen and as long as the ‘Roos aren’t conceding goals (6 cleansheets, count them SIX!) then we can play as “boring” as we like just so long as we make it. And we have. So everyone please take it as a blessing and not a right, after all we aren’t Uruguay, are we Recoba :).
