2009 Wimbledon Update

by The Stinger on Jun.28, 2009, under Other Sports

The first week of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships are almost over and all the dead weight has been disposed of and the real matches can begin.  The tournament was robbed of a big name earlier in the week when Pat Cash decided not to play.  Also Rafael Nadal pulled out but it was barely reported.

In the Womens Tennis/Screaming Championships former world number one player/screamer Maria Sharapova was out-voiced by Gisela Dulko from Argentina.  In a powerful vocal display the Argentine beat Sharapova who was beginning to show the first signs of an injury, possibly laryngitis.

Another former world number one vocalist, Ana Ivanovic is working her way through the tournament well although she has had a few stumbles along the way but I am sure that Simon Cowell is working on that with her.  Her latest conquest was Australian Samantha Stosur, not a noted vocalist and she was thoroughly outmatched by the shrieking Serbian. The 2009 NBA Draft

by The Stinger on Jun.25, 2009, under American, Basketball

Tomorrow, a select bunch of the worlds basketball talent are about to cash in on a whole mess of money.  The annual NBA draft is taking place in New York and for a few guys it will be a nervous wait to see who will be the top five picks.

Oklahoma’s beastman Blake Griffin seems like a lock for the top spot but there are a number of others sniffing around for the big money as well.  Spain’s wild eyed Boy Wonder, Ricky Rubio has the whole world talking, and not just about whether he knows any English.  He has been playing Pro-ball in Spain since he was 14 and also is a professional bullfighter [citation needed]. NBA End Of Playoffs Review

by The Stinger on Jun.23, 2009, under American, Basketball

I know this has taken a while to get up here but here it is.  The 2009 NBA Playoffs have been run and won and quite easily in the end by the Los Angeles Lakers but not without some stumbles and hurdles along the way.  Kobe Bryant may not have won the league MVP award but he did show he can play when it counts.

There were some great series in the first round of the playoffs including the Boston v Chicago and Miami v Atlanta series’ that went to seven games.  Chicago showed with a few additions they might be able to return to the glory years of the 90’s but also they showed the frailties that exist in Boston without Garnett.

Two former powerhouses suffered embarassing first round defeats.  The Spurs and Detroit both showed that maybe their time has passed for now.  LeBron James treated Detroit like his own personal punching bag as he took control of every game.  As for San Antonio, you know you are going bad when you get beat by Dallas in a playoff series.

Speaking of Dallas, they not only embarrassed themselves on the court in the second round but also off it.  During the series with Denver, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban thought it would be a good idea to go off his nut and tell Kenyon Martin’s mother that her son was a punk (or worse if you believe some reports). The FIFA Confederations Cup

by The Stinger on Jun.19, 2009, under Football

In South Africa at the moment FIFA is holding the most useless tournament in world football, The Confederations Cup.  It is basically used as a test run for the host country of the World Cup to see how they go.  The football it seems is secondary.

The tournament brings together the winners of each regions most recent tournament.  Plus the home country and the previous World Cup winners.  But just have a look at the teams that are here.  Iraq, the champions of Asia will not be at the World Cup.

New Zealand, the champions of Oceania (thanks to Australia leaving) will have to play the 5th best Asian team to make the World Cup and their current form suggests they would not win even if they started the match now by themselves.  Egypt, the champions of Africa have some work to do to get into the Cup. Tim Cahill - Australian Legend

by The Stinger on Jun.18, 2009, under Australian, Football

Tonight at the MCG, Australian football star and Socceroo lynch pin Tim Cahill once again proved just how important he is to the success of the World Cup campaign.  After going 1-0 down in the first half to Japan someone needed to step up and change the game.  Over to you Mr Cahill.

He somehow managed to once again out jump a taller opponent to head home the equaliser from a Vinnie Grella free kick.  His leaping ability and timing is the stuff of legend and I am sure that in 40 or 50 years time when we relate stories of Cahill to our Great Grandchildren he will have been able to leap tall buildings in a single bound.  Maybe that’s how the Superman comic got started?

His second goal was not the most difficult strike of his career but he had to be there for the final touch off the corner from Nicky Carle.  Cahill gave the ‘Roos what would be a 2-1 win.  He was suitably pleased with his effort and when he was subbed off late in the game he received a well deserved standing ovation. Formula 1 is Dead - Long Live MotoGP!

by The Stinger on Jun.16, 2009, under Motorsport

Anyone who witnessed this weekends Spanish round of the MotoGP at Catalunya could not help but be amazed at the level of competition displayed by these guys.  Yamaha team-mates Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo had a battle for the ages that not only went down to the last lap but went down to the last corner.

These two maniacs fought out a duel at over 300 km/h whilst coming within inches of each other as they swapped the lead four times on the last lap.  Lorenzo admitted after the race that he didn’t close down the inside line on the last corner because he didn’t think it was possible or Rossi had the courage to attempt the pass.

Now unless Jorge has been living under a rock for the past decade he should have known Rossi had the courage and the will to make that pass.  But I guess he will learn from that mistake.  He missed out on a win in front of his adoring fans and Rossi picked up his 99th career victory. Pittsburgh Penguins - 2009 NHL Stanley Cup Champions!

by The Stinger on Jun.13, 2009, under American, Other Sports

The Pittsburgh Penguins today won Game 7 of the NHL Stanley Cup Final series over the Detroit Red Wings.  A great series came down to a one game showdown in Detroit.  All six of the preceeding games were won by the home team so it was up to Pittsburgh to buck that trend.

The first period was a tight but fast paced affair with chances at both ends.  It was clear early on that both goalies were on their games.  The opening minutes of the second period saw an incident that could have shaped the rest of the match, an injury to Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby.

Coming soon after Maxime Talbot had given The Pens a 1-0 lead with a pounce on a defensive lapse, the loss of Crosby to a leg injury was pivotal.  He had been crunched along the boards in a clean hit from Franzen but came up limping and struggling to reach the bench.  He would not return for the rest of the period. Shock News - Cristiano Ronaldo Sold To Real Madrid

by The Stinger on Jun.12, 2009, under Football

Well the biggest transfer in world football that never happened last year may have just happened.  But this is just like Ronaldo.  Just days after Kaka made his big money move from AC Milan to Real Madrid out comes the news of this transfer.

Never one to be upstaged by anyone, Ronaldo gets his wish to leave Manchester United and join the new Galacticos at Real Madrid for some kind of record transfer deal.  Well good bye and good luck, that’s what Alex Ferguson will be saying.

Sir Alex needs to be the big dog at his club and when one of his players gets too big for his boots he doesn’t mind letting them go, no matter how good they are.  Just ask David Beckham about Fergies tolerance levels. (continue reading…)
