NHL Playoffs - Game 7 Shenanigans

by The Stinger on Apr.30, 2009, under American

In New Jersey the Devils and the Carolina Hurricanes played out game 7 of a very tight and entertaining series.  The game was full of hits and misses and the crowd definitely got their monies worth.  They saw Ray Whitney invent a new shot.  It involved a slap shot one-timer that he mostly missed, deflected onto his own skate and then through the five hole of Brodeur.  Nice work if you can pull it off.

Carolina wanna-be doctor Tim Gleason attempted to perform an Eyeballectomy on Zach Parise in the 2nd period using the thin end of his stick.  I think he needs to work on his aim or slow down his delivery as Zach still has full eye sight.  Oh well practice makes perfect.

The greatest goalie of all time (according to certain sources) Martin Brodeur forgot that a 60 minute game doesn’t end at 58 minutes.  He let in two goals in the last two minutes to give Carolina a 4-3 game and series win and send 17,000 Devils fans home wondering who they should trade for in place of that moron Brodeur.

In Washington the Capitals faced New York in another game 7.  The Rangers got out of the gate early after Sean Avery decided to play hockey and set up Nik Antropov for the go ahead goal.  The Caps got back in the game on a Alex Semin goal late in the 1st.  The Washington ice crew played Keystone Cops with a pane glass for an hour before the game could get started again.

The old man of The Caps, Sergei Federov turned back the clock and a few numbers on his electric blanket and fired home the winner late in the final period to give Washington the series win 4-3.

And now the series we have all been waiting for can happen, Washington v Pittsburgh.  Crosby v Ovechkin.  Sid the Kid v Ovy the…Russian guy.  Let’s hope it lives up to the hype.

A Big Weekend In Sport

by The Stinger on Apr.28, 2009, under Uncategorized

There was some big sports stories that happened over the weekend with the NBA and NHL playoffs continuing, the Euro football leagues coming to their climax, the MotoGP, Superbikes, NASCAR and Indycars all continued their seasons and a big weekend in Aussie Football.

In the NHL, New York Rangers coach John Tortorella benched star pest Sean Avery for a game during their series with Washington.  He then proceeded to have a “fight”  with a fan behind the bench.  I guess he was showing Avery how to be an idiot the right way.  There are talks that at the next WWE Pay-Per-View, Avery & Tortorella will team up for a match against Martin Brodeur and a Random Drunk Capitals Fan.  Should be a good one. Man Utd, Inter Milan, Barcelona - Have they won already?

by The Stinger on Apr.26, 2009, under Football

It would seem that barring some unforeseen calamitous results in the coming weeks that at least Manchester Utd and Inter Milan have their respective leagues wrapped up and should Barcelona beat Real Madrid in their forthcoming match they too will have La Liga in their keeping.

It looks like Man U are already looking forward to next season by trying to acquire the services of AC Milan star Kaka.  But this story might have a bigger ending than first thought because to finance this move they may look to see if Real Madrid have a good offer for one Cristiano Ronaldo. AFL Round 5 Preview - ANZAC Weekend

by The Stinger on Apr.24, 2009, under Australian, Football

We have arrived at Round 5 and teams are beginning to sort themselves out.  This is one of the most important weekends and days on the Australian calendar, ANZAC Day.  Normally Essendon and Collingwood play the annual ANZAC Day game but with it falling on a Saturday this year a few other teams get to experience playing on the revered day.

On Friday night two of the in form teams meet at AAMI Stadium, Port Adelaide and St. Kilda.  The Saints are undefeated so far and have turned up the defensive pressure on teams.  With the game looking to be a wet one, the hard tackling and aggressive attitude at the ball will come in handy.  Port had a slip up in round 2 against West Coast but last week proved they will be a force by beating Hawthorn in  Melbourne.  This will be a tough, hard fought battle and the winner will be the harder team at the ball. NHL & NBA Playoffs - The First Week

by The Stinger on Apr.24, 2009, under American, Basketball

We have completed a week in the Stanley Cup playoffs and almost a week in the NBA so it would be a good time to see how everybody is going.  We have a couple of series that are over and some that soon will be but some others that might go down to the wire.

In the NHL, Boston completed their sweep of a very disappointing Montreal Canadiens.  The Bruins look to have the goods this year and big Tim Thomas is providing the great goaltending that every Cup hopeful needs.  Right Winger Michael Ryder is the playoff point leader at the moment with 4 goals and 3 assists. Liverpool v Arsenal - Instant Classic?

by The Stinger on Apr.22, 2009, under Football

Liverpool versus Arsenal at Anfield is always a blockbuster date on the EPL calendar but sometimes it doesn’t live up to the hype.  This one did in terms of goalmouth action and tense football but some of the defending was not at a very high level.  Andrei Arshavin scored four goals, two of them absolute crackers although one of those again was from a coughed up pass from defence that Arshavin jumped on and then unleashed an absolutely unstoppable shot at Reina who not surprisingly didn’t stop it.

But let’s look at Liverpool’s defence at the moment.  Aside from the shutout against Blackburn, they have let in 11 goals in three games, albeit against quality opposition Chelsea and Arsenal.  At times their back four have had more holes in it than Swiss Cheese.

For a side that is supposedly one of the best in the world they have shown more than their fair share of mental lapses.  If they keep leaking goals then they may just be dead in the very water they are leaking.  Their one saving grace is that they have one of the most dangerous strikers in world football, Fernando Torres.  He has the ability to score from anywhere and often has to get The Reds out of trouble.

Having said all that though this was a game that will be replayed and remembered for a long time to come.  A 4-4 draw in a very important part of the season is always going to become famous.

2009 NBA Playoffs - The West

by The Stinger on Apr.19, 2009, under American, Basketball

Out west there are still some good teams that are hanging around not wanting to go away and let the East dominate.  Here are the matchups.

1-LA Lakers v 8-Utah Jazz

It is always easy to say how Kobe goes so go the Lakers.  But with Gasol and Bynum and Fisher as his running mates the Lakers are a definite contender and do not always have to rely on Kobe to save them in every game.  However it is comforting to know that if your team gets in trouble you can always keep giving the ball to one of the best players ever to play this game. Big Weekend of European Football

by The Stinger on Apr.18, 2009, under Football

The FA Cup semi finals are on this weekend with a massive matchup between Arsenal and Chelsea followed by Manchester United taking on Everton tomorrow.  Three of these teams are coming off midweek european games and are starting to feel the pinch.  Everton might see this as an opportunity to ruin Man Utd’s run at a quadruple title season.

Arsenal and Chelsea will look on this as their only shot at domestic glory this year so expect fireworks especially from Arsenal.  But there also is the small matter of the EPL and the lesser lights trying to gain a spot in next years Europa league. (continue reading…)
